Isle of Wight Tourism Branching Out

The 2009 Isle of Wight tourism train has now hit the tracks running, £340,000 will be spent this year on advertising the Island in key area's. The campaign running under the title 'Just Add Water' will be for all to see throughout key area's. London and the Midlands where custom is already generated are going to be the main areas targeted and it is hoped this splash of cash will only add to the success. The adverts will be shown on the tube in London and across the bus network throughout the midlands. Advertising campaigns will also be found across the national papers and magazines in an attempt to bring people to the Island. With the economic downturn it is forecast that many more people will stay in the UK for their holidays this year. Making the Island the perfect destination for a great holiday.

However will all this be fruitful with an all new setup at the helm that is struggling to juggle the needs of the existing platforms? If you didn't already know the council has removed the tourism team from the Westridge centre and the 'Pocket Guides' have been passed to the Chamber of Commerce. On inspection of the Winter Pocket Guide all I can say is too much advertising and not enough content make for a poor publication. People used to hang onto the guides as a resource to the Island but these new guides do little to make you want to hold onto them. No more town guides, no longer a section on cycling it seems the content has been sucked out in favour of making more money from the guide. Gowight.com the new initiative that was planned to be launched back end of 2008 is still not live. With people already planning their 09 breaks and Easter not as far away as you imagine this really should be right in the spotlight.

All in all I think it's great that the money is still being spent to promote the Island but if people don't get the right information before they get here or while they are here they may well be very disappointed.

Cycling Isle of Wight - Route 4 - Cowes

Route 4 Cowes Map - This split section route can be enjoyed in 2 ways, Parkhurst Forest provides a short cut right through the middle of the outer trail but be warned that's the hillier route. If you do the full distance Newtown Creek is your furthest point west and a very beautiful area to stop off and admire the view. With the exception of the Parkhurst Forest cut off this is a fairly flat trail with hills here and there. Personally I would go anti clockwise and soak up the views from Gurnard Bay on the way back. 16 miles (28km)

Cycling on the Isle of Wight - Route 3 - Cowes

Route 3 Cowes map - Nice steady ride that takes you either side of the River Medina on a circular route via the Floating Bridge (Chain Ferry). A 9 mile (15km) route that is fairly flat with the hillier section on the East Cowes side of the river medina. Personally I would ride anti clockwise and take the hill on first, making Newport a great stopping off point in the middle for some well deserved refreshments. The latter leg back to Cowes is the old railway line and gives some great up close views of the Medina River.

Newport - Isle of Wight

Newport is the principle town of the Isle of Wight, making it the main shopping area for the Island.

You will also find a number of bars and restaurants along Newport high street.

Newport is the islands hub not only for commerical reasons, the road network on the Island all leads into and out of Newport making it very important to the Island's infrasructure. The reason for this is the roads all bottle neck into the centre due to the north centre of the Island being cut off by the River Medina. This causes all traffic from Cowes wishing to go East to either use the Chain Ferry or funnel into Newport outwards, the same can be said for East Cowes traffic going West.

What's going on in Newport:
Quay Arts
Newport Football Club
Newclose Cricket Ground

ISLE OF WIGHT FESTIVAL
The Isle of Wight Festival is a music event held yearly in Seaclose Park (just outside of Newport) 2002 saw the re emergence of the festival on the Isle of Wight which always brings people to the Island in droves to see their favourite bands.

Other area's of interest that surround Newport are Carisbrooke Castle
3 Prisons are housed on the outskirts of Newport (Parkhurst, Albany and Camp Hill)
